This paper briefly describes the main fatures of the Italian companies financial structure and highlights the importance of a stronger access to the capital markets in order to rebalance their capital structure and finance their investments and their internationalisation strategies. The main actions adopted by Borsa Italiana to favor this process are also described in the second part of the paper. Finally, a number of measures that could be adopted by the policy makers are also briefly examined.
