The debate over the «Romanity» of Roman Egypt and on the creation of the province of Egypt between Ptolemaic continuities and Roman changes, lasting for nearly half a century, has involved both historians and papyrologists. This contribution summarises the main points of the controversy and attempts, in the lights of the most recent research, to offer a non-binary perspective on the question.
