The text analyzes the role played by Mamertinus gratiarum actio in trying to give political and cultural legitimation to the reign of Julian. It is intended to show that, against the apparent contradiction inherent in the concept of "new tradition", this panegyric reflects the attempt to conduct a real overturning of the concept of novitas, which assumes a meaning profoundly positive. In conclusion, we could note how the processes of urban renewal are examples of this trend.
