"Dei delitti e delle pene” by Cesare Beccaria was published anonymous, for the first time, in July 1764, and was condemned by the Congregation put at the head of the compilation of the Index librorum prohibitorum, by a decree dated February, 3, 1766. Waiting for the opportunity of reading the text of the sentence, many are still the points deserving explanation to begin with the connection with Voltaire.
